Work At Home Ocala

What is De Land, Florida like as a place to live?
I’m looking for a more peaceful, smaller town to live in — have visited Deland a few times, and it seems to have a really beautiful, hip downtown, probably due to the presence of Stetson University. Its proximity to the springs and Ocala National Forest also make it appealing. Yet I read that the crime statistics are really high there for some reason. Can someone give me an inside perspective on what it’s like to live there? Quality of life, crime, the ease of finding friendly, well-educated people to hang out with, tolerance toward people who don’t quite fit in the “Leave It to Beaver” mold? I’m a 43 year old white male, unmarried, unstereotypically gay, love to hike/walk/bike, more about nature and peace and quiet than crazy nightlife. Looking to rent, wanna get out of the city. I work at home on the internet mostly. Would this be a good match for me?
My cousin lives in DeLand and loves it, works at the Cape. My brother (died in 2000) use to live in DeBary, on the St. John’s River, because he loved to fish. It’s a nice area and close enough to the beaches and Orlando attractions without having to suffer with the hectic routine of traffic and lots of people.
You should also check out Wekiva Springs, great place for canoeing. Salt Springs in the Ocala National Forest is one of my favorite places to spend a relaxing day. Go early, as it tends to get crowded in the afternoon, especially on week-ends.
Let’s face it, crime is in every town, you just have to be aware of your surroundings and protect yourself and your property to the best of your ability.
Try it for 6 months to a year. If you don’t like it, move somewhere else; like Eustis or Mount Dora.
