Home childcare vs Humana?

I do home daycare now from 6:45am to 11:30pm and weekends. I do it at home and it’s good money. I get to be home when my kids come home. The cons is the parents of my daycare kids parents can be a pain, My pay can go up and down, and I can’t be promoted. I got a interveiw with Humana and don’t no if i should go. I may not make as good of money and I will have to clock in daily. But the pros are I can be promoted, I only got to work first shift, and I get to be around adults I don’t no what to do. Someone help!

Hmmm, technically you CAN be promoted- it’s all in how you look at it. For example, if you decide that you really love running a childcare business, keep doing what you are doing, advertise your business, develop good relationships with your prize parents and create a website for your “company”. Then have your parents provide testimonials of your work and reliability. Once you establish yourself more professionally, start requiring the parents to pay up front at the first of the month for the “space” for their child- not a weekly basis. The only excuse that your pay should change is in the event of an EMERGENCY(at your discretion) or if the child is sick. Even then, it is up to you to decide if you want to refund or credit for the next month’s reserved time. My daycare that my child goes to does not refund or credit for absences which is acceptable to me as a parent. Consider meeting with a successful daycare owner where you live- someone who wouldn’t consider you a threat if you were to talk to them about organization and professionalism. Create your own opportunities for promotion. Eventually as you become more successful and your time is more in demand, then you can raise your rates according to the local economy/ cost of living. Then the more money that you take in, the more you can set aside to rent or buy your own daycare. This is where you become promotable as an owner and operator of your business- bringing in more jobs and more kids which equals more money. All this doesn’t mean you have to be GREEDY but if you love being your own boss, clocking in for someone else is going to lose its spark fast and then you would have lost your clientele that you already have with your daycare. Make sense? If the parents cause you grief, establish your policies and stick to them. If you have a strict attendance policy and develop a waiting list, parents will know if they screw up, there is someone waiting to take their spot. Don’t feel as though you have to take their garbage as if you are the “hired help”. Business is business and if you have to give them 2 weeks notice that their child needs a new place for daycare, make sure you have someone ready to take their place. Smooth transition. Also- when you expand, you will be around adults that YOU hired which is rewarding in itself! Remember- parents will always need childcare if they want to work and earn a living. If this doesn’t sound good to you, then you should definitely go to your Humana interview. Good luck!
UPDATE: Sorry I did not intend on leaving out the licensing information. I assumed you were already licensed since you have already been doing this for a living.
