Work At Home Dispatcher

My husband is self employed. He works as a dispatcher. What can he write off at tax time?
He drives to work.
He also uses the computer and phone at home.
Has an office set up at home.
Oh I should add, I’m in Canada (ontario) thanks!! I’m trying to fill out the forms using quicktax 2007.
Beautiful answer, Notaperv, however the person is asking your question in reference to Canadian tax law, and you’re quoting US tax law (referring to the IRS and miles, etc.)
Is your husband given a T4 from his client, or does he issue an invoice periodically? use this link to determine if he’s truly self-employed.

The CRA has rules with regards to home office expenses. Please ensure that the office is a dedicated work space and he earns a significant portion of his income from said office.
Vehicle usage can be written off if he is self employed, and has a log book of all trips taken for business and pleasure. The CRA only deals with original receipts – not credit card statements.
A significant benefit of being self-employed is the fact that you can take deductions against your income. Deductible expenses are generally the same for both incorporated and un-incorporated businesses. Refer to the CRA’s Employment Expenses” booklet #T4044 (E) for further information. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/t4044/
