Swamp Cooler vs. Air Conditioning?

Hello.

Can someone please give me some information/experiences on Swamp Coolers (evaporative coolers)?? Pros and Cons? I live in San Diego California and it is HOT. It seems like air conditioning is really pricey right now and a portable air conditioning unit runs up the electric bill. Would a swamp cooler be better for us here and do the job? Our home is about 2400 sq ft but we’d only need about 1800 cooled. I remember my Grandparents had a swamp cooler and it worked GREAT. But that’s all I can remember about it and they lived in Northern Cal….

And if someone knows a company down here I could call that would be great. I can only seem to find portable swamp cooler providers online and people who do A/C

From what I remember of my trips to San Diego, the humidity tends to be high and that really doesn’t help a swamp cooler to work. They need very low humidity to provide significant relief from the heat. They do best in areas like Las Vegas, parts of Colorado, West Texas, etc where the humidity is in the 10 to 30% range. They will provide some cooling at humidity levels up to the 50% range but you may also feel the dampness.
