Internet Money-Making Sites & Some Practical Wisdom

If you’ve heard of the people who make thousands upon thousands of dollars on their websites and want to do the same, let me be the first to burst your bubble. Most sites don’t bring in the millions of dollars a Google or Amazon does. Set your hopes in the more realistic sphere and you won’t be disappointed. Many folks who start out to make money on the internet wind up not making anything, but if you’re smart about it, then you can turn your site or sites into money producers. Just don’t shoot the moon in your projected earnings, and read on about how to make money with your own website. One key thing I will stress is this: if you make money with your own website and don’t like the fact that it only makes you $50/month, do that again and again and again. What’s $50 x 50? $50 x 100? You get the idea. Make a dollar, then just keep repeating what you did.

There are so many ways to make money on the web, but I’ll skip the spamming Nigerian Prince idea for now. You don’t want to go the scam spam route. Here are a couple of “white hat” ideas.

Affiliations

Otherwise known as “affiliate programs,” this is simply another way to get money coming into your site. You partner with another company, such as Amazon or eBay, or any e-commerce store, to sell their products on your site. The money comes in modest affiliate commissions. If you go this route, I would strongly recommend the product called “Micro Niche Finder,” or a similar tool, and optimize your site to zero in on one niche vs. a broad storefront. That way you can be sure you can compete with the big dogs. There are also product affiliate programs, in which you can contact a product provider or merchant (e.g.: CitiBank Visa) and look into what affiliate programs they offer. You then proceed to build sites that generate customers for these products or merchants, just like in the Amazon or eBay example.  I personally know of a handful of local people making a very decent living on credit card affiliate programs alone. Getting into the affiliate game is one of my personal goals, as soon as I’m done with my current projects. (That’s because I’m a one-thing-at-a-time, do-it-right sort of fellow, so I’ll have to try affiliate programs after I’ve seen returns on my current schtick.)

Advertising

This is what made television big. There are two main ways online advertising makes you money: “click-throughs” and number of viewers of the ad. If you have lots of traffic to your site, you will get paid more for your ads. Optimization is key, so get ranked! One thing to keep in mind is to track your ads. Google has probably the easiest and most rewarding system, with the best support in my opinion. If you’re asking, the answer is “Yes, I have a Google AdSense account.” It’s easy to use their AdSense code and Google Analytics to track your success or see where you need to beef things up. There’s also the handy-dandy Google AdWords Keyword Tool, which gives plenty of data to find keywords to optimize your site and ads for.

There are plenty of ways to make money on your sites, but remember this: there are no guarantees. If your site is ranked in Google’s SERP (search engine response page) back behind page 5 or 6 or worse, which it will most definitely be by default, your first issue will be to figure out SEO (search engine optimization). Getting ranked is of utmost importance no matter how you decide to make money with your own website. If you figure out how to make a dollar, then multiply your efforts by building multiple sites. That’s what I’m doing. As for SEO articles, I hear ArticlesBase provides a number of free articles on that topic as well as others. (Disclaimer: I love ArticlesBase with a passion. I have ArticlesBase articles being created in a sub-program in the back of my cerebral cortex 24/7, and I want to get a wireless modem jacked to my forehead, like Neo in the Matrix, that somehow connects telepathically to my desktop. I do not get any kickbacks from ArticlesBase, however, other than the satisfaction of seeing my name on my screen as a published author.)

For further ideas on optimizing a site for Google AdSense, there’s a cool and savvy fellow named John (X-Factor), and no, he’s not affiliated with the superhero mutant team of the same name. That’s his online identity in forums. I’m using his e-Book entitled Micro Niche AdSense Course because I have the world’s most amazing brother-in-law who turned me onto this gem. You can hear an interview with John that was archived at blogtalkradio.com under “beginnerinternetbiz,” air date of 9-19-09. Actually, that channel on blogtalkradio is laden with tons of cool interviews and ideas not covered in this article. (Disclaimer: I just discovered that channel writing this article, I have no idea if any of the material is good, but I’m adding it to my favorites on my browser right now! I’m such an accidental genius.)

One last piece of advice and I’m back at the grindstone: see it through, and be patient. I have seen so many people invest hours upon hours of time in this and other business opportunities just to walk away from it all because they haven’t seen results after a week. Making money with your own websites can take months, expect it. That’s just life–anything worth keeping is worth working your tail off for and waiting. If you don’t believe me, you haven’t had a decent spaghetti sauce. That’s another article for a later time. My advice was said most notably by Dory in Disney’s Finding Nemo, “Just keep swimming, just keep swimming…” It may take months to get ranked, get your first check, or even just take the first step. Don’t give up. You’ll never know how successful you could have been if you give up the race before it even starts.
