The Basics of RSA Queensland Courses
Who, what when, where and why?
It is has been mandatory to hold a Queensland RSA if you’re serving alcohol in the Sunshine State since 2008. Every year, thousands of people do these courses … and most of these either keep their job or get a new one, thanks to their QLD RSA certification. Today we look at all the basics of getting an RSA in Queensland, from ‘who’ right through to ‘why’!
Who Needs a Queensland RSA?
If you are involved in the service or supply of liquor in any premises in Queensland, you need a QLD RSA. Additionally, if the licensee of the premises is an individual (as opposed to a trust or corporation), they should also hold an RSA.
If you have management or senior staff that are often the ‘person in charge’ on the premises, even though they are not usually involved in serving alcohol, they should also hold a QLD RSA. They may need to support the judgement of a frontline staff member at some stage, and should be trained for that.
What Does Getting a Queensland RSA Involve?
Queensland RSAs don’t take up much time, though they do offer valuable information. The course takes about 4-5 hours to complete, and you’ll cover subject matter such as:
- The potential effects of alcohol
- The laws relating to service of alcohol – who can and cannot be served, the premises’ responsibility to keep patrons safe
- Recognising the signs of intoxication
- How to refuse service
- How to ask people to leave (though usually senior staff will do this)
- House policies that can support responsible service of alcohol
- How the RSA guidelines relate to private functions
- What is a standard drink
- Close down procedures
When Can I Do My RSA Course?
Happily, the days of having to wait weeks or months for a course to start running in your local area are over! The rise of online Queensland RSA providers means that courses are instantly accessible. See below for more information on getting your RSA online.
Where Can I Complete My QLD RSA?
There are several reputable national providers offering RSAs online. Some offer instant certificate download, others will mail out your certificate. Whichever provider you choose, make sure they are on the list of approved RSA trainers in your state. In Queensland, the Office of Liquor Gaming and Racing (OLGR) oversees QLD RSAs; the responsible government department name differs state by state.
Why is a Queensland RSA Necessary?
The base reason that QLD RSAs are needed is to ensure that neither employees nor licensed premises break the law regarding alcohol serving, which is designed to protect people both from excessive alcohol, and from others who have been drinking.
A Queensland RSA is mandatory for all people involved in serving liquor in Queensland. The rest of Australia has a nationally accepted certificate, Queensland has chosen to implement different training standards because the state represents the largest tourism economy in Australia.
